NORTHPOWER's SCHOOL SAFETY PROGRAMME

Taipuha School

Northpower as a Line Company is concerned about the number of electrical accidents around the country involving children.

There has been a boy badly burnt after putting his hand inside the lid of a vandalised ground level transformer box and touching high voltage live parts. Another boy received severe burns and fell after climbing a power pole and coming in contact with high voltage live parts.

Another boy was badly burnt when he climbed into a tree and touched a live overhead line.

Tinopai SchoolAs a company we want to promote and improve community safety and acknowledge that schools can play an important part in this. A campaign emphasizing how careful you need to be around electrical equipment such as substations, transformers, pillar boxes, poles and lines was developed and initiated in 2003.

Jan Thomsen, Northpower’s Customer Advisor has visited the majority of year 1-6 schools within the Northpower area and is now on her second round of visits, talking to the students and reinforcing the safety message.

Schools have responded well to the campaign as have parents and feedback has been excellent. An example is the parent of a five year old who contacted Jan after her visit, to say her son came home full of how safe you need to be around electricity or else you may get "electroshooted".

Another parent sent Jan the following email: "Our little boy is in Year 2 at Glenbervie Primary School and I just wanted to thank you for what must have been a very interesting and inspiring talk you did with the kids recently!  He talked about it constantly for twenty minutes on the way to school the next day and has been referring back to it ever since.   He's been pointing out transformers up poles and at the side of the road and looking for substations, telling me about some awful accidents and asking me questions about electricity and safety!!  He remembered it all so vividly! The other weekend we made a simple circuit from directions in a science book he has and made static electricity with a balloon!  Thanks a lot for your enthusiasm and commitment!"

Important Safety Reminders
Be aware of overhead lines, particularly:
If working on or near a roof
If manoeuvering tall items, e.g. ladders, pipes, yachts, farm machinery, aerials
If considering placing or extending a building
If trees are nearby that children can climb or pruning could be hazardous
If flying kites or fishing
If you see a downed line stay well away and keep others away. Get help.
