Kensington first to benefit from fibre to the door telecommunications network
Whangarei Report, Whangarei
Over the last 15 years the Telecommunications Industry has undergone a tremendous change. High speed broadband networks are changing the way we communicate and have become an essential part of our communities. By utilising existing assets Northpower is bringing this latest world-class technology to our region.
Part of the recent development is Northpower’s fibre to the door project making the very latest technology available to Kensington residents. The project covering 20 streets to be undertaken in three stages has started this month and is expected to be completed in June 2010. Please see the Kensington Fibre Expansion Map.
The project comes amidst a major fibre to the door awareness campaign by fellow New Zealand Regional Fibre Group member Vector, which features a television commercial, social media activity and a website for people to vote in support of an ultra-fast fibre broadband network. Northpower has already started installing overhead fibre cables in a way that has minimal visual impact. This is because they are carefully “hidden” by installing the fibre amongst the existing low voltage power lines. Fibre terminals are also being installed on each pole in readiness for a customer connection. Once a customer signs up with a service provider, the thin fibre service cable is extended aerially into their property. The fibre cable will connect to an optical network terminal (similar in size to a modem) installed near an existing power point where cables are then run to your computer and phone, or a wireless home network.
A one-off cost may be charged by the service provider to install all the necessary equipment. The monthly charge for a 5Mbps (Mega bits per second) fibre connection will be similar to current broadband pricing.
Xf Net, TelstraClear, Uber Group and WorldXchange are some of the service providers signed on to Northpower’s fibre-optic network each offering exciting new packages to choose from including; broadband, voice calls over the internet, video on demand, television channels, and more. With fibre, keeping in touch with family and friends has never been simpler with seamless real time video conferencing, expensive long distance phone calls will become a thing of the past. Entertainment to the home will increase exponentially with high definition video delivered in an instant over fibre. Imagine having the world’s largest movie selection at your fingertips or being able to customise your viewing experience and selecting from hundreds of television channels available worldwide. But the best thing is all members in the household can be online at the same time with no reduction in internet speed or services.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to using Northpower’s fibre-optic network in our community. Our children’s education will benefit through being able to share research and information with other students around the world, learn Spanish from a teacher in Madrid or geography from researches in Antarctica. Sick or home schooled students will be able to participate in virtual lessons and be part of the class.
In terms of health, telemedicine is already changing the future of health around the world through computer assisted surgery where medical experts can oversee surgery from other hospitals. Soon, you’ll be able to consult with your doctor or specialist without leaving home and prescriptions will become paperless.
Whangarei businesses in the city centre have already connected and are seeing firsthand the benefit of having a reliable and ultra-fast fibre optic connection. Many have chosen to connect to Northpower’s fibre network using connections of up to 100Mbps, creating greater efficiencies in their business by boosting productivity and making communication dramatically faster. Technology such as cloud computing has greatly improved the linking of computer resources allowing branches to share servers and high cost equipment and compete both nationally and internationally from Whangarei.
In the same way power consumers are shareholders in Northpower’s power lines network, they are also shareholders in Northpower’s fibre network. Northpower’s vision is that once the fibre network becomes sustainable in as little as 10 years, consumers can also expect to share in trust distributions and if they use Northpower’s fibre network they’ll also receive line charge holidays similar to the power lines network. This adds all the more reason for consumers to get behind Northpower and show support in their bid to government.
If Northpower is successful, they will be able to expand their network throughout Whangarei within three years – seven years faster than the 10 year government deadline. This will mean more job creation in the region and development of on-the-job training in conjunction with NorthTec. Northpower and its people are becoming highly sought after both nationally and internationally as specialists in building fibre-optic networks.
So, we urge you to get behind Northpower and register your support at www.northpower.com/fibre/support or phoning 0800 NORTHPOWER (667847).
