Weather causes power outages

Northpower took just five hours to restore power to more than 1700 Whangarei homes who lost power because of flooding.

Strong winds downed six power lines. The first outage on Cemetery Rd at 5.42am left 832 customers without power.

Rain saturates north of country

Six vehicles are stuck in rising flood waters in Northland.

Police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett says a truck and the cars tried to cross the flooded State Highway 1 near Whakapara, just north of Hikurangi.
The occupants of the vehicles all escaped uninjured.

The road is now closed and diversions have been put in place through Hukerenui.
Along with floodwatesr, gale force winds in Northland have caused blackouts for hundreds of homes.
