Northpower has developed a capability second to none in virtually all parts of the distribution business. Subdivisions and overhead to underground conversions are particular specialties; substation construction and maintenance are growing strengths. Northpower has some of the strongest overhead lines capabilities in New Zealand with more than 50 glove and barrier linemen and more than 150 qualified linemen overall. More recently, Northpower has developed capabilities in gas and communications networks, as well as transmission lines. With over 600 employees, many of whom work in potentially dangerous conditions, safety is the top priority for Northpower. We work hard to turn these words into actions. Beginning with a grassroots approach, we view safety from a field perspective, and always consider the best ways to achieve the necessary safety culture and attitude throughout the company. Northpower introduced a number of industry-leading safety programmes, including the unique Trade Coach programme which was established to mentor field staff, both on the job and in the classroom. We have also initiated a separate programme to engage the families of Northpower staff to help keep their father, mother or spouse safe. The overall impact of our programmes is that Northpower is a very safe place to work. |
