With over 650 rescue missions to its credit in the last year, Northland’s rescue helicopter has certainly touched the lives of a great number of people. Given the rural isolation of much of Northland and the response times associated with deploying rescue services, the rescue helicopter performs a vital life-saving function. Northpower has supported the Northland Emergency Services Trust (NEST) and the helicopter service since its inception in 1988. Over time, costs associated with the service have more than quadrupled. In response to the increased costs, Northpower (and joint sponsor Top Energy) stepped up to the challenge to match public donations, dollar for dollar. The 2006 campaign raised a RECORD $345,000 the largest amount ever raised during any public appeal for the service. With an average of 13.5 hours flown each week, the helicopter can clock up over 700 hours of flying time throughout a year.
