Electricians
Electricians are involved with the installation of electrically operated equipment such as motors, generators, circuit breakers, transformers, switchboards, switchgear and the associated wiring of this equipment. You could work on 230/400 volt commercial and industrial installations, install new wiring and electrical equipment, or service existing installations. Alternatively, you could work on high voltage equipment and work at a power station, sub station or switchyard.
Line Mechanics
Line Mechanics provide an essential service dealing in powerline construction, maintenance and emergency repairs. You would work outdoors, erecting and replacing power poles, running conductors and erecting line hardware, joining and splicing cables and testing lines and circuits. You would also have administrative and job planning responsibilities.
Cable Jointers
As a Cable Jointer you would be working with high voltage electricity cables and be responsible for installing, joining and terminating live or disconnected power cables and locating and repairing cable faults. Cable Jointers work in a variety of locations, from power stations and substations and also under city streets.
Electrical Fitters
Electrical fitters install, overhaul and repair electrical equipment such as generators, transformers, circuit breakers and switchgear along with the wiring of this equipment. You would work closely with Electricians and usually be located in a power station, sub station or switchgear environment.
Trainee Engineers
As a Trainee Engineer, you would undertake a programme which combines academic and practical training, leading to a qualification as a professional or sub professional Engineer. This will enable you to embark on a wide range of career paths including design, consulting, product development and research in an extensive range of areas.
Faultmen
Faultmen respond to emergencies and faults on the electricity network and at customer's premises. A Faultman's day is varied and unpredictable and may include replacing a pole demolished by an out of control car, disconnecting a house so painting can be carried out safely around the power connection point, obtaining a final meter reading when a premises is being vacated, or checking a customer's electrical installation when a pole fuse has blown.
