Northpower increases line charges to Electricity Retailers
Line charges for Electricity Retailers operating in Northpower’s Network will increase from 1 April 2009. The additional cost to Retailers such as Meridian, Genesis, Empower, Contact and Mercury equates to just 13 cents per day for the average domestic consumer.
Northpower Chief Executive, Mark Gatland said “capital expenditure required to keep the Network operating effectively has increased from $4 million per annum to over $6 million. Despite the region experiencing 15 years of steady growth and a 10% increase in electricity consumption over the past five years, Northpower has kept its capital expenditure relatively low by putting enhancements in place to fully utilise the existing capacity in the network.”
Mr Gatland went on to say “We inherited a very well engineered core network that was primarily built in the 1950’s and 1960’s. This has enabled us to devise ways to efficiently use most network equipment for its full physical life. However, that early equipment is now near the end of its life and this along with the increased power consumption is materially impacting on the performance of the network. As we upgrade this equipment we also have to ensure the core elements of the network are configured so future capacity increases can be achieved without expensive reconfigurations.”
Northpower still remains relatively well priced in comparison to other North Island Lines Network companies. We are proud to be locally owned returning millions of dollars to consumers through line charge holidays and distributions from the Northpower Electric Power Trust (NEPT).
